When Polyaspartic Makes Sense

Polyaspartic floor coating is a newer resin system that cures much faster than standard epoxy and holds its color in sunlight. HomeGuide's comparison lists a full cure of 1 to 2 days for polyaspartic against up to a week for epoxy. It also rates polyaspartic's UV resistance as excellent and standard epoxy's as poor to fair. In Shreveport, that speed and UV stability matter for garages that stay open to the afternoon sun, for porches and patios, and for anyone who cannot be without the garage for a week.

Working with Shreveport weather

HomeGuide notes that polyaspartic has a wider application temperature range than epoxy. That helps here. Summers are long and hot, and Wikipedia's climate data shows around 35 nights a year at or below freezing, so the window for slow-curing epoxy can get tight at both ends of the year. Polyaspartic gives us more days we can work. It is not unlimited, though. Fast cure also means a short working time, so we mix in small batches, work in sections and keep crews moving.

Polyaspartic over epoxy, or on its own

There are two common ways to use it.

  • As a topcoat: an epoxy base and flake layer with a polyaspartic clear coat. You get epoxy's thickness and bond with polyaspartic's UV and wear resistance on top.
  • As a full system: polyaspartic primer, flake and clear, often done in one day. This is the fastest route and the one most one-day garage offers use.

We recommend one or the other after we have checked your slab. A damp slab may call for a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer under the polyaspartic.

Thinner coats, more flexibility

Polyaspartic goes on thinner per coat than epoxy. HomeGuide lists about 2 to 6 mils per coat against 10 to 20 for epoxy. It is also more flexible, which helps on concrete that expands and contracts with heat. Thin coats show what is underneath, so prep and crack repair have to be done well. On clay soils that keep moving, no coating can bridge a crack that keeps opening. We fill stable cracks and leave moving joints as joints.

Where we use it most

  • Garages where the owner needs to park again within a day or two
  • West-facing garages that get direct sun with the door open
  • Covered porches, patios and outdoor kitchens
  • Topcoats over flake and metallic floors that need extra scratch resistance
  • Small commercial spaces that cannot close for long

The trade-off is cost

Polyaspartic materials cost more than epoxy. HomeGuide puts installed polyaspartic at about $5 to $12 per square foot against $4 to $10 for epoxy. For many garages the faster return to use and better UV resistance are worth it. For an interior room with no sun exposure, epoxy with a standard topcoat may be the better value, and we will tell you so.

What This Covers

A polyaspartic job covers slab prep, the coating system and the clear finish.

One-day garage systems

Primer, flake and clear applied in a single working day where the slab allows it.

Polyaspartic topcoats

A UV-stable, abrasion-resistant clear coat over epoxy flake or color.

Moisture-tolerant primers

A primer for slabs that test damp, applied before the polyaspartic layers.

Outdoor and porch systems

Textured, UV-stable finishes for covered patios and porches.

How It Works

1. Test the slab

We check moisture, hardness and cracks to decide between a full polyaspartic system and an epoxy base.

2. Grind and repair

Diamond grinding opens the surface. Cracks and chips are filled.

3. Apply in sections

Primer, flake and clear go down in small batches because the material cures quickly.

4. Return to use

Foot traffic is often fine within hours, and we give you a specific drive-on time.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions

Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a garage?

It cures faster and resists UV much better, according to HomeGuide's comparison. Epoxy builds thicker per coat and costs less. Many garages get both: an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat.

Can a garage really be done in one day?

On a sound, dry slab of normal size, often yes. Heavy paint removal, a lot of crack repair or a damp slab can push it to two days.

How long does polyaspartic last?

HomeGuide lists a lifespan of 10 to 20 years or more for polyaspartic. Prep quality, traffic and how the floor is cleaned all affect it.

Can I put polyaspartic on my patio?

Yes. It is UV-stable, which makes it one of the better resin choices outdoors. We add texture for grip and suggest lighter colors for areas in full sun.
