Working Floors in Farm Country

Our epoxy flooring work in Belcher is mostly about floors that work hard. The village sits in northeastern Caddo Parish, less than a mile from the Red River, with U.S. 71 running along its west side. Shreveport is 17 miles south. Out here a slab is as likely to hold a tractor or a tool bench as a family car, and the coating has to match that job.

A small village with deep roots

Belcher used to be called Horseshoe, after the bayou that runs through it. In 1899 it was renamed for James Clinton Belcher, the overseer of Wild Lucia Plantation. The 2020 Census counted 248 people. It has stayed a small place, with farm ground around it and Interstate 49 about 3 miles to the west.

Shops and barns come first

On a rural lot the shop building often matters more than the house garage. Those slabs take dropped implements, hydraulic fluid, diesel, fertilizer dust and mud carried in on boots and tires. Bare concrete soaks all of that up. Over time it stains, dusts and gets harder to keep clean.

When we can, we schedule shop work for a slow stretch, so the building is empty for a couple of days. We move what we can with you on the first morning and plan where the equipment will sit while the floor cures.

For those floors we install our shop and commercial floor epoxy. It is a thicker 100% solids system that stands up to heavier loads and chemical spills. We can add a light broadcast of aggregate in wet areas or near the big door so the floor is less slick when it is muddy. Here is how we usually split up a farm shop:

  • Work bays: a thick base coat and a tough topcoat that handles jacks, stands and dragged equipment
  • Wash-down areas: added texture for grip where water sits
  • Parts and tool rooms: a lighter color that makes small parts easier to find on the floor
  • The house garage: a flake floor that hides tracked-in dirt between cleanings

Family garages that double as mudrooms

Belcher has always been a family town. At the 2000 Census, 41.4% of households had children under 18, and the average household size was 2.75. In a house like that, the garage is often the main entrance. It holds cleats, a second fridge, bikes and whatever came in from the field. A flake floor is a good fit. The chips add texture underfoot, and the pattern hides dust and grit until you have time to hose it out.

Old slabs need real prep

Many rural slabs were poured to be useful, not pretty. We often find rough finishes, low spots, wide cracks and old oil that has soaked deep into the concrete. We diamond-grind the whole floor so the coating has something to grip. We degrease the oil, fill stable cracks and mark control joints so they can keep moving. If a section of slab is heaving or has an active leak under it, we tell you before you spend money on a finish.

Weather and timing

Metal shop buildings get hot in summer, and a hot slab shortens the working time of epoxy. On big shop floors we often start early in the morning and keep the doors shut once the coating is down. When a fast return to service matters, such as during planting or harvest, we can use a faster-curing polyaspartic topcoat. We go over the cure times before we schedule, so you can plan around them.

Belcher Questions

Can epoxy handle a tractor or heavy equipment in a Belcher shop?

Yes, with the right system. For shop floors we use a thick 100% solids epoxy over a fully ground slab. Steel tracks, dragged blades and very heavy point loads can still mark any coating, so we talk through how the shop is used before we quote.

Will the floor be slick when it is muddy or wet?

It can be if it is smooth. We add flake or a broadcast aggregate in areas that get wet, such as near the big door or a wash-down spot, so the floor keeps some grip.

Do you come out to rural properties north of Shreveport?

We do. Belcher, Gilliam and the farm country along U.S. 71 are part of our regular area, and the estimate visit is free.
