Outdoor Concrete in Northwest Louisiana
Patio & Pool Deck Coatings in Shreveport face a long outdoor season. Wikipedia's climate summary lists 91 days a year above 90°F, more than 51 inches of rain, and severe spring and summer storms with heavy rain and hail. Outdoor slabs bake in the sun, get soaked, then bake again. Over time they fade, crack, grow mildew in shady spots and get slick when wet. A coating can renew a worn patio or deck and make it safer to walk on, if the slab is repaired first.
What we see on outdoor slabs here
- Cracks that open in dry spells as clay soil shrinks
- A patio that has dropped away from the house or tipped toward it
- Gaps between the pool deck and the coping
- Faded, peeling paint or sealer
- Dark, slippery patches in shady areas that stay damp
- A surface too hot to cross barefoot in July
Picking a system for outdoor use
Not every floor coating belongs outside. HomeGuide rates standard epoxy's UV resistance as poor to fair, so plain epoxy in direct sun can yellow and chalk. For outdoor slabs we use systems made for weather:
- Textured cool-deck finishes: a sprayed or troweled cementitious texture, usually in a light color. HomeGuide lists Kool Deck at about $4 to $6 per square foot.
- Polyaspartic flake systems: a flake or solid finish with a UV-stable clear coat and added grit, often used on covered patios and porches.
- Clear sealing: for concrete that is sound and only needs protection from water and stains.
Rain and drainage
With more than 51 inches of rain a year, water management matters as much as the coating. A patio should slope away from the house so water runs off. A coating can seal the surface, but it will not fix a slab that drains back toward your foundation. If water ponds or runs the wrong way, we tell you, and leveling or regrading may need to happen first.
Clay soil and cracks
The USDA's description of the Bossier soil series lists smectitic clay, the type that swells and shrinks with moisture. Outdoor slabs feel that movement more than garage floors because they have no house around them and get rain directly. We fill stable cracks, cut or keep control joints where the slab needs to move, and seal the joint between the deck and the coping with a flexible sealant. A coating will not hold a slab together that is still moving.
Color, heat and timing
Light colors stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark ones, which matters around a pool. We bring samples you can set in the sun at your house. Outdoor coatings need a dry slab and a dry forecast, so we watch the radar, start early in the day and may split a large deck into sections so part of the pool area stays usable.

How It Works
1. Inspect
We check cracks, joints, drainage and the existing surface, and talk through finishes.
2. Clean and repair
The slab is ground or pressure cleaned, mildew is removed, and cracks and joints are repaired.
3. Coat on a dry day
The finish goes down in good weather, starting early and working in sections if needed.
4. Cure
We tell you when to walk on it, bring furniture back and use the pool.

Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
Can you put epoxy on a pool deck?
Plain epoxy is a poor choice in full sun because of its weak UV resistance. Pool decks do better with a textured cementitious finish or a UV-stable polyaspartic system with added grit.
How much does it cost to resurface a pool deck?
HomeGuide puts most pool deck resurfacing jobs of 500 to 900 square feet at $1,500 to $10,800, with a national average around $6,200. Kool Deck runs about $4 to $6 per square foot and stamped overlays $7 to $20.
Will a coated patio be slippery when it rains?
It should not be. We build texture into every outdoor finish, either in the coating itself or with grit in the topcoat.
Will the coating fix my cracked patio?
It will cover and seal cracks that have stopped moving. A slab that is still shifting will crack again, so we may recommend joint work or leveling first.
