A Decorative Floor Poured in Place
Metallic epoxy floors are poured resin floors with metallic pigments mixed in. As the installer moves the resin, the pigments drift and settle into swirls, ripples and depth that look a little like marble or moving water. No two floors come out the same. In Shreveport and Bossier City, people ask for metallic epoxy for converted garages, game rooms, home bars, home gyms, salons, retail floors and car dealerships.
How a metallic floor is installed
- The slab is diamond ground and every crack and low spot is repaired. A metallic floor shows every flaw beneath it.
- A primer and a solid base color go down. The base color affects the final look.
- The metallic layer is poured and worked by hand with rollers, brushes or sprayed solvent to create the pattern you chose.
- A clear topcoat protects the finish and sets the sheen.
The pattern is made by hand, so we agree on colors and the general style before the pour, using sample boards and photos.
Moisture testing is not optional
Most interior rooms here sit on concrete slabs poured on the ground, and the ground holds water. The USDA describes the Bossier soil series on Red River flood plains as poorly drained, with very slow permeability, and saturated for long stretches from December through April. Add Shreveport's average relative humidity of 72% from Wikipedia's climate data, and moisture becomes the main risk for any glossy interior coating. Vapor coming up through the slab can cloud a metallic floor or push it off in blisters. We test before we quote, and on damp slabs we use a moisture-mitigating primer or tell you the floor is not a good candidate.
Taking up the old floor
Many metallic jobs start with a room that has tile, carpet, vinyl plank or glued-down flooring on it. All of that has to come off, along with the adhesive, before grinding. Thinset and mastic are slow to remove and add to the price. We look at what is down now and include removal in the written quote.
Living with a metallic floor
Metallic floors are glossy, and gloss shows scratches, grit and pet claws more than a flake floor does. A durable clear topcoat, felt pads on furniture, and mats at outside doors keep it looking right. Sweep or dust mop often and clean with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Direct sun through a glass door can yellow standard epoxy over time, so in sunny rooms we use a UV-stable topcoat.
Where metallic is not the right call
We do not recommend metallic for a working garage where cars park every day, or for outdoor slabs. Hot tires, grit and UV wear a glossy decorative floor quickly. For those spaces a flake or polyaspartic system is more forgiving.
What This Covers
A metallic floor covers removal of old flooring, prep, the pour and the clear finish.
Flooring and adhesive removal
Tile, carpet, vinyl and mastic taken off so the slab can be ground.
Slab leveling and repair
Cracks, low spots and old patches filled so they do not show through the finish.
Metallic pour
A base color plus metallic resin worked by hand into the pattern you chose.
UV-stable clear coat
A protective topcoat in the sheen you want, with UV resistance for sunny rooms.

Typical Metallic Epoxy Floor Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Metallic epoxy, per sq ft | $5 to $12 |
| Professional epoxy, per sq ft (all types) | $3 to $12 |
| 300 sq ft room at $5 to $12 per sq ft | $1,500 to $3,600 |
| Moisture and hardness testing | $50 to $300 |
| Concrete resurfacing, per sq ft | $3 to $5 |
National ranges from This Old House's epoxy floor cost guide and HomeGuide's polyaspartic floor coating cost guide; the 300 sq ft row is a calculation from the per-square-foot range. Shreveport prices can differ, and removing old flooring and adhesive adds to the total. Your written estimate is the price.
How It Works
1. Design and test
We look at colors and patterns with you and test the slab for moisture.
2. Remove and grind
Old flooring and adhesive come up, then the slab is ground and repaired.
3. Pour
Primer, base color and the metallic layer go down, usually across one or two days.
4. Seal and cure
The clear coat goes on, and we tell you when to bring furniture back.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
This Old House lists metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot. Removing old flooring, leveling the slab and moisture mitigation add to that. We give you a written price after seeing the room.
Can metallic epoxy go over tile?
We remove the tile first. Grout lines telegraph through the finish, and the coating can only be as strong as the tile's bond to the slab.
Is a metallic floor slippery?
The glossy finish can be slick when wet. We can add a fine anti-slip additive to the topcoat, and mats at doors help.
Can I choose exactly how the pattern looks?
You choose the colors and general style, such as soft marble, bold swirls or a lava look. The final pattern forms as the resin moves, so every floor is a little different.
