Why Flake Is the Most Common Garage Finish
Epoxy flake floors are the finish most Shreveport homeowners choose for a garage, and the reasons are practical. A flake floor hides dust, tire marks and small scuffs between cleanings. It adds texture so the floor has some grip when a wet car pulls in after a storm. It also covers the patched cracks and color differences that older concrete tends to have. On page one of a local search, the questions people post ask for custom flake blends by name, so it is clearly the look many people here want.
How a flake floor is built
A flake floor is a layered system.
- The slab is diamond ground and repaired.
- A pigmented epoxy base coat goes down.
- While the base is wet, colored vinyl flakes are broadcast by hand until no base color shows. This is called broadcasting to refusal.
- Once the base cures, the loose flake is swept up and the surface is scraped to knock down sharp edges.
- One or two clear topcoats seal the flake in.
The topcoat controls how the floor feels. More topcoat gives a smoother surface that is easier to clean. Less gives more texture and grip.
Full broadcast or partial
A full broadcast covers the whole base in chips and is the toughest, most forgiving option. A partial broadcast scatters chips over a solid color for a lighter, more speckled look. Partial floors show dirt more and have less texture, but some people prefer them for laundry rooms and workshops. We bring sample boards of both so you can compare.
Picking a blend
Flake comes in sizes from about 1/16 inch up to 1/4 inch and in blends of two to five colors. Larger chips give a bolder pattern. Smaller chips read almost like granite from a few feet away. Medium grays and tans hide dust well. Very light blends show tire marks, and very dark ones show dried water spots, which matters with Shreveport's 51-plus inches of yearly rain. We help you choose after seeing your space and lighting.
The slab still matters most
Chips do not fix a bad bond. If the base coat goes onto damp or poorly prepared concrete, the whole layered system can lift together. Clay soils around Shreveport move slabs and crack them, so we fill stable cracks and handle moving joints before the base coat goes down. We also take moisture readings, since humid weather and slow-draining ground keep many slabs damp.
Topcoat choice
On an interior garage we usually top flake with polyaspartic or a polyurethane clear. HomeGuide rates standard epoxy's UV resistance as poor to fair and polyaspartic's as excellent. That matters on a west-facing garage where the afternoon sun reaches deep into the room. For porches and other outdoor spots, a UV-stable topcoat is the only sensible choice.
What This Covers
A flake floor covers prep, the base coat, the broadcast and the clear coats.

Partial broadcast
Chips scattered over a solid base color for a lighter, speckled look.

Chip size and color blend chosen from sample boards to suit your space.
Anti-slip topcoat
A clear finish with added grit for steps, ramps and wet entries.

How It Works
1. Choose your blend
We bring flake samples to the estimate and check the slab for moisture and cracks.
2. Prep the slab
Grinding, crack repair and cleaning, so the base coat bonds to sound concrete.
3. Base and broadcast
The base coat goes down and flake is broadcast to full coverage while it is wet.
4. Scrape and seal
Loose chips are removed, the surface is scraped, and the clear topcoat seals it in.

Epoxy Flake Floors Questions
Is a flake floor more slippery than plain epoxy?
Usually less. The chips give the surface texture. The more topcoat we apply, the smoother it gets, so we set the finish to match how much grip you want.
How much do flakes add to the cost?
HomeGuide lists flakes, custom colors or patterns at about $0.50 to $2.00 per square foot on top of the base system. Full broadcast uses more chip than partial, so it sits toward the higher end.
Will a flake floor show dirt?
Much less than a solid color. Mid-tone gray and tan blends hide dust and tire marks well. Very light and very dark blends show more.
Can a flake floor go on a porch or patio?
Yes, with a UV-stable topcoat and extra texture. A plain epoxy topcoat outdoors can yellow in the sun, so we use polyaspartic outside.
