From Dairy Country to New Driveways

Stonewall has changed fast. In 1943 the community had 37 separate dairies. Today it is a town where people live and drive north to work in Shreveport, 19 miles up US 171. The 2020 census counted 2,273 residents, up from 1,814 in 2010, and Wikipedia lists a 2025 estimate of 2,716. Growth like that means fresh concrete, and fresh concrete raises the most common epoxy flooring question we hear in Stonewall: how soon can a new garage floor be coated?

The new-slab timeline

Concrete keeps curing for weeks after the builder leaves. Moisture moves up and out of the slab the whole time. A coating sealed over a slab that is still giving off water can blister. Most coating makers want concrete at least 28 days old, and we want a moisture reading we are comfortable with, not just a date on the calendar.

A rough plan for a new home:

  • Weeks 1 to 4: let the slab cure and keep oil and fertilizer bags off it
  • Around week 4 or later: we test moisture and look at the surface
  • Install: grind, fill any shrinkage cracks, coat
  • After: give the topcoat its full cure before parking

Why a new slab still gets ground

Builders trowel garage floors smooth and hard. That finish looks clean, and coatings slide right off it. New slabs can also have a thin weak layer on top called laitance, and some get a curing compound sprayed on. Diamond grinding removes all three and opens the surface so the base coat can bite in. Skipping it is why many new-home kit floors peel within a couple of years.

Protecting the floor during move-in

Move-in week is hard on a new garage floor. Boxes get dragged, dollies roll across it and furniture gets staged there. If your coating goes down before the move, lay cardboard in the main path and lift heavy items instead of sliding them. If you would rather move first, we can coat the garage once things settle and the space is clear.

Builder upgrades versus coating later

Some builders offer a garage coating as an upgrade before closing. It can be convenient. It is worth asking what product is used, whether the slab will be ground, and how long the concrete will have cured by then. A coating installed a week after the pour, on a smooth slab, is the one most likely to peel. Waiting a month and coating it properly usually costs about the same and lasts far longer. We are glad to look at your plans or a builder's spec sheet at the estimate.

Shrinkage cracks are normal

Nearly every new slab grows a few hairline cracks as it dries. They are not a sign of a bad pour. We fill the hairlines that have stopped moving. Saw-cut control joints stay open in the finished floor so the slab can keep doing its job.

The older buildings out back

Stonewall's farm history still shows up in barns, milk sheds and equipment buildings on older properties. Those slabs can be rough, stained and much older than the house next to them. A shop-grade epoxy or a textured flake floor turns one into a clean workspace or storage room.

What new Stonewall homeowners usually pick

  • Flake garage floors in a mid-tone blend
  • Polyaspartic topcoats for one or two-day installs
  • Patio coatings for back slabs poured with the house

Stonewall Growth and History

Stonewall Questions

How long should I wait to coat a brand-new garage slab?

At least 28 days, and longer if a moisture test says the slab is still wet. We test before we schedule. Coating too early is one of the main causes of blistering on new homes.

My new garage floor looks perfect. Why grind it?

A smooth troweled finish, surface laitance and curing compounds all keep a coating from bonding. Grinding removes them and gives the base coat something to grip.

Can you coat an old dairy barn or shed slab?

If the concrete is sound, yes. Old ag slabs usually need more grinding and crack repair. We will tell you at the estimate if a section is too broken to coat.
